Description
Translation provided by Youdao
An antique Khmer style sandstone Buddha head in the bayon style. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. The brow is boarded by a broad ornate band leading to a cone shaped ushnisha cover decorated with an abstract lotus petal motif, as is typical of the Bayon style. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. Traces of a rich applied patina demonstrating red, black, brown colours and gold leaf. Sculptures such as this would originally have been painted in vibrant colours by the Khmer.

The face has eyebrows described by a continuous ridged line, rimmed lips and wide open eyes. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped. One of the most recognisable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.Provenance: Private USA Collection.
