A Gandharan Gray Schist Figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, Gandhara, 2nd-3rd century 21-3/4 x 12-1/4 x 4-1/4 inches (55.2 x 31.1 x 10.8 cm) The present gray schist figure of the future Buddha Maitreya in a meditative posture. Though missing the water vessel between his hands, he is distinguished by the makara beads that adorn his chest and the elaborate hairstyle--a chignon in place of a cranial protuberance like that of the historical buddha Shakyamuni.
