He spent most of his life in Shanghai and is considered one of the most successful Shanghai School painters. Wang Kun's paintings suggest his study of the traditional Four Wangs lineage as well as earlier masters from Song to Yuan dynasties. In addition to his artistic output, the artist was a teacher and social activist. In 1909, he founded the Yuyuan shuhua shanhui (Yu Garden Calligraphy and Painting Charitable Association) with Wu Changshuo and many others in Shanghai and Beijing. The artists sought to relieve the nation's suffering by donating half of the proceeds from their member's selling exhibitions. The collector's seal belongs to Li Bowen, a well-known Hong Kong collector and philanthropist. A portion of his painting collection was published in Zhongguo jindai baijia huaji, Hong Kong, 1962.
