Yousheng huaren zhuan recorded him as a painter specializing in flower paintings. The current lot is a fine example of such genre. As the viewer unrolls the scroll, flowers from all seasons bloom continuously. Each flower represents a different auspicious meaning. The artist applied the gongbi technique, capturing the extravagance with the inclusion of all the subtle details. From the inscription, it seems that Bao Huang was familiar with Jiang Pu (1708-1761)'s work, who was the son of the well-known flower painter Jiang Tingxi (1669-1732).
