In his own distinct style the artist contrasted the delicate rendering of the insects in gongbi mode with the more freely painted flowers and vegetables that provide a setting for the insects to inhabit. Most of these series of images were produced by the artist in the early to mid-1940's, when his eyesight was still sharp and he was able to paint the fine details on the insects.
