The US Mint struck in bronze 170 of these VD Brenner medals, each individually numbered on the edge - this one is #43. Given to the members of the Rowfant Club of Cleveland. John Hay (1835 - 1905) was chosen by Lincoln to be his private secretary and remained in that position until Lincoln's death. He then entered the diplomatic service with multiple overseas postings. McKinley appointed him ambassador to England (Court of St. James) in 1897 and then Secretary of State in 1898. He dealt with the Spanish-American war and the Philippines, the Open-Door policy toward China and Japan. He stayed as Sec of State with Teddy Roosevelt and helped obtain the Panama Canal Treaty in 1903. He died in office in 1905 Smedley #94, Obtained 11/79
