Calumet & Hecla Mining Company Medal, 1916, Bronze. Presented to Richard H. Nicholls "For Faithful and Efficient Service for a Period of 23 years" Original patina on obverse with some scratches on reverse. Original case from 1916. Interesting history of the mine, copper being discovered in Michigan in1864 and by 1868 through 1886 it was the leading copper producing mine in the US and in the world from 1871-1880 - paying out $72 million in dividends in the 19th century. It built the first industrial hospital in the US in 1868. Its mines reached a depth of 4,900 feet and operated for over 100 years, finally shutting down in 1970. The man on the right of the medal appears to be Alexander Aggassiz, one of the first people to run the mine Smedley #108, Obtained 5/93
