Anonymous Japanese Master, The Death of Buddha, Edo period (1603 - 1868)The death of Buddha (nehan zu). Buddha on his deathbed between tall "sala" trees. He is surrounded by numerous of his mourning disciples (rakan), world guardians, bodhisattva and deities. The fauna in mourning in the lower part of the picture. Above the treetops Maya, guided by Aniruddha, floats down on a cloud. Next to her the full moon. Ink and paint on silk. Mounted on a board and framed. Dimensions 157 x 83 cm. Provenance: South German private collection, acquired on 19.11.1994 at Nagel.Condition: II
