A pewter tankard with relief decoration by Isaac Faust, Strasbourg, circa 1640/50Pewter with a beautiful age patina. The slightly conical body mounted on a stepped stand. The lid with a sliding knob, the thumb rest in the shape of a mascaron. The volute handle with a female herm. Continuous relief decoration. Three cartouches with allegorical figures, "Patentia", "Solertia" and "Nonvi", arranged around the panels. The lid adorned with mascarons and putti. A Strasbourg city mark struck in the base, along with the master's mark of Isaac Faust, who worked there between 1628 and 1669. Next to an old inventory label (tr.) "Krahnast Collection". Height 18 cm, weight 1036 g. A rare Strasbourg tankard with relief decoration in excellent condition. Isaac Faust modelled his work closely on Briot's designs. Owing to the similarity of the cartouches with the well-known Temperantia plate, this tankard is often referred to as the "Briot tankard". Another such tankard can be found in the Bertram collection.
