A rare and charming Roman marble pyxis, 1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D.Round box with lid made of brownish marble. The side wall decorated all around with a very finely cut and composed relief frieze of bacchanalian and pastoral scenes. On the lid an equally finely cut frieze, with a golden handle knob, which is decorated with a stylised blossom. A masterly work of antique miniature art, such as could probably be found in senatorial households! Intact. Height 4 cm. Diameter 4.3 cm.Provenance: South German private collection.Condition: II +
