Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Early 2nd millennium BC. A ceramic model offering table with discoid top and short tripod legs, the upper face with a circlet of fish around a central flower in relief, pellets around. See a terracotta dish with the same decorative rosette in Woolley, L., Ur excavations volume IX, the Neo-Babylonian and Persian Periods, London, 1962, fig.U.16214. 91.7 grams, 82mm (3 1/4"). From an important collection, by descent; seen by Professor Lambert in the 1980-1990s. The small artefact was presumably a votive for the gods. The rosette motif is interesting as it was widely used by the Babylonians on all the objects of their material culture. The image of a fish is linked with the fish god Dagon, originally a Babylonian fertility god who evolved into a major Northwest Semitic god, reportedly of fish and fishing, a symbol of multiplying.
