Translation provided by Youdao
7th-8th century AD. A set of gilt horse harness fittings comprising: seven lobate plaques ornamented by six circles on the sides and central pearled decoration, two identical plaques fitted with a fastening ring, five square plaques expanded outside with four lobes, a rectangular strap-end with round terminal and foliage motives, a pentagonal buckle decorated with the same foliage ornament and two strap holders decorated with five lobes around the edge; probably of Eastern Roman workmanship. See Arslan, E.A., L'oro D'egli Avari, Popolo delle Steppe In Europa, Milano, 2000, for illustration of use and for comparable pieces, particularly p.97 and 135, cat.215,220. 44 grams total, 10-33mm (1/2 - 1 1/4"). From the family collection of a UK gentleman, by descent in the early 1970s; previously acquired before 1960. The beautiful horsemen burials found in the Avar necropolis of central Europe date to the last third of the 7th century AD and the early 8th century AD show wealth and pomp. The harnesses of the horses shine with thick gilding. The bridle and plume straps are often decorated with stamped and gilded rosettes and fittings. Our fittings, for dimensions and proportions, are probably part of ornaments of the bridle and reins. [18, No Reserve] Condition Report Fine condition.
