Camille Pissarro, French 1830-1903- La Marchande Ambalant, St Thomas, 1852; pencil, signed with initials, titled, dated Juillet 13- 52, and inscribed St Thomas lower center, 21x29.5cm Provenance: Stern Pissarro, London, where acquired by the present owner. Exhibition: Pissarro, Four Generations, Stern Gallery, Tel-Aviv 1 September to 27th October 2014, 2014 Note: Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter whose importance in the history of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art cannot be overstated. Indeed, Pissarro was the only artist whose work was included in all eight of the Paris Impressionist exhibitions in the late 19th century, demonstrating his central role in this seminal artistic movement. Pissarro was closely associated with central figures of 19th-century French art, including Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, the immense influence of both of whom being evident in Pissarros own work. Corot acted as a tutor to Pissarro, encouraging the latter to paint his natural surroundings en plein air, an approach which defined Pissarros output throughout his career. While studying at the Académie Suisse, Pissarro became friends with contemporaries who included Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet, and whose influence on one anothers art is immediately apparent. Pissarros approach in turn heavily impacted the work of a number of central Post-Impressionist artists, such as Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, the latter of whom Pissarro worked alongside later in his career. The present piece provides an illuminating snapshot into Pissarros approach, and his interests as an artist. The subject matter reveals his desire to depict themes which may be considered to be mundane or unimportant, marking a departure from the large-scale history paintings which had defined much of the art promoted by the French establishment earlier in the 19th century. Instead, this work conveys a strong sense of intimacy, both through the medium of drawing, and through its depiction of a two views of a lone woman absorbed in thought, unguarded and seemingly unaware of the observer. Please refer to department for condition report
