André Derain, French 1880-1954- Nu; crayon on paper, signed with estate stamp lower right; signed with Knaublich estate stamp on the reverse, 27x21cm (ARR) Provenance: Knaublich Estate; Private Collection, Paris Note: André Derain is best known for his contribution to the Fauvist movement. In 1905, with a group of artists including Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), Derain exhibited at the Salon dAutomne, Paris, where the critic Louis Vauxcelles used the word 'fauves' (wild beasts), the movement later being called Fauvism. Derains oeuvre marries the volumes of Paul Cezannes (1839-1906) flatness with known non-Western sculpture, which is evident in this portrait. Please refer to department for condition report
