1st century BC. A facetted biconical lead slingshot (glans) with inscription in Latin letters 'CN' (Cnei) 'MAG' (Magn) on one side, and 'IMP' for 'IMPERATOR' (victorio general) to the other side, i.e Gnae Pompei Magn Imperator (Pompey the Great the victorio general"). Cf. D'Amato, R. and Sumner, G., Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier: From Mari tomod, 112 BC-AD 192, London, 2009, fig.32, p.45, for a similar glandes from Zaragoza Meum, the one with the name of Pompey inscribeding from Munda battlefield. 47.4 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Lincolnshire, UK, collection, 1990s. Property of a Ssex gentleman. The shot (Völling type 1C) is marked with the abbreviated name of Gnae Pompey; it was ed in quantity at the Battle of Monda (or Munda) against Juli Caesar, 17th March 45 BC. The projectiles could be of different material: lead (glandes) or in pottery or stone (lapides) missiles. Sometimes they were signed with the name of the general, as with our specimen. [No Reserve]
