13th-14th century AD. A quatrefoil mount bearing an enamelled owl to one face, walking left with exaggerated feet. 13.5 grams, 34mm (1 1/4"). English collection formed in the 1990s. UK art market. Property of an Essex gentleman. Two recorded families are known to have an owl incorporated into their coat of arms- Massy of Aldford and Masye de Grafton et de Cestr'. It is possible this mount is from one of these families.
