A Rare Chinese Straw-Glazed Pottery Dancing FigureTang DynastyCovered overall with a green straw-glaze. Her entire kneeled body in a long flowing pleated dress almost entirely covering the oval base where she has one bended knee exposed with the other hidden, her accentuated upraised right arm and left arm hanging down and hands covered by the long flowing sleeves of her belted dress up to her neck, her head and body tilted to the left, her serene face made more so by her downcast eyes and her double coiffed hair with elaborate knots on each side, the remnants of black and red paint highlighting her eyes and hair. Height 8 1/2 inches. Note:There are many examples of dancers made during the Tang period covered in different colored glazes and in different modes of expression. However, very few of them have any resemblance to the dancer offered here. She is covered in a rare green straw glaze which appears infrequently on Tang period models. See a Tang green straw-glazed pair of small horses, Christies New York 23 September 2020, lot 898 (Realized price USD 22,500; a Tang green straw glazed figure of a foreigner, Christies New York 18 May 2008, lot 522 (Realized price 6,000). Moreover, it is rare to find in Tang dancers the very accentuated length of her arms and the manner and position in which her arms are extended. See Christies New York 9 May 2018, lot 967 (Realized price USD 18,750) for a more traditional representation of a dancer with covered arms.C Property from the Collection of Steven J. Harvis
