A Rare Chinese Conical Purple-Splashed Junyao BowlSong-Yuan DynastyThe conical bowl has widely flaring steep sides rising to a slightly everted rim, and covered inside and out with subtle black crackle and a thick unctuous blue-turquoise glaze, a splash of flambe red and blue glazes dripping in an oval of light purple glaze from the mouth rim to the center of the cavetto which is covered with a blue Song-type glaze, the blue-turquoise glaze on the body pooling at the foot rim and stopping perfectly, the foot rim and the mouth rim burnt in the firing but with some blue-turquoise glaze showing inside the base. Diameter 5 3/4 inches. Note:Junyao conical bowls of the steep-sided shape offered here are rare and those with red, blue and purple splashes even more so. Junyao bowls dated to the Song Dynasty, even when denominated as "conical bowls", are generally of rounded form; and those most desirable also have red, blue and purple splashes.
