John William Edy, British 1760-1820- South View of Sewandroog, from 'Twelve Views of Places in the Kingdom of Mysore, the Country of Tippoo Sultan' After Lieutenant Robert Hyde Colebrooke; coloured aquatint, published by Mr Thomson, London, 1 November 1793, 44 x 59.5 cm. Literature: Travel in aquatint and lithography 1770-1860 from the library of J.R. Abbey, San Francisco 1991, vol.419.3. Note: Robert Hyde Colebrooke was a surveyor in the Bengal Infantry with whom he served from 1778 until his death in 1808. He took part in the third Anglo-Mysore war as a surveyor, making a series of drawings of Seringapatam, the capital of the Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan, as well as Bangalore and the hill forts of Mysore at the same time as he surveyed the routes taken by the army of Lord Cornwallis in 1791 and 1792. His drawings were engraved by John William Edy, a Dane working in London, and his aquatints were published as 'Twelve views of places in the Kingdom of Mysore, the country of Tippoo Sultan', in London in 1793. The set proved so popular that several further editions were printed. Another edition of the present work is housed in the Wele Collection, London [no.29816i].Please refer to department for condition report
