The vases are placed on fitted wood-carved stands. The form of the shoulder vases is likely inspired by 18th century jade vases of square form. The stone-carved vases are supported by a tall spreading rectangular foot and provided with side handles shaped in the form of animal heads, with a trunk holding loose rings. Bird-like creatures with paws are positioned on top of the animal-head handles. The covers of the vases are crowned with carved figures of stylized birds who are holding loose rings in their beaks. On the opposite main sides of the vases there are large rectangular panels featuring He Xian‘gu, one of the Eight Immortals of Daoism, done in low relief. He Xian‘gu is depicted as a young woman dressed in a simple robe. Apanied by cranes and clouds, she is floating on sea waves, holding a fly whisk in her left hand and a basket of fruit in her raised right hand. An island with a few houses is at a distance. In the upper part of the vases, two sides of the necks are decorated with incised gold-coloured Buddhist dharma wheels. A flame is rising from the center of each wheel. He Xiangu is usually depicted in a group of Eight Immortals. According to legends, she lived during the Tang period and was given immortality as a reward for her selflessness and moral character.
