Jade, woodChinaDimensions: Height 95 cm by 105 cm, diameter 70 cmWeight: around 100 to 150 kilogramsA large heavy tripod vessel in the shape of a ding with openwork lid, made of dark serpentine jade. The stone appears in different shades of green. The round bottom container is supported by three sturdy legs which are shaped in the form of elephant feet and decorated with large animal heads. The surface of the vessel has low reliefs of leaf ornaments. Two carved loose-ring side handles feature dragon heads and peacock feathers. The lid has large roundels bearing low reliefs of hybrid creatures which are half dragon and half bird. The spaces between the roundels are carved in openwork floral design so that the smoke can rise into the air. A coiling dragon on the top has a scaly body and large claws and is holding three loose-ring handles in its open mouth. The incense burner is standing on a wooden base. Chinese tripod ding vessels were first used during the Bronze age (about 1800-250 BC) for cooking and food offerings at ritual ceremonies. Since the Ming dynasty Xuande period (1426-1435), large tripod cauldrons with covers were also used as incense burners and decorated with lions. While incense burners were originally made from bronze, the use of stone for this type of vessel was invented during Qing era (1644-1911). The half-and-half mixtures of dragon and bird characteristics which embellish the lid and the side handles are particularly unusual creations.Purchased: 18th December 1996 from Nemco International Jewelers, NY , USA value 85.000 USAUCTION DATE:Saturday 23rd April 202211:00 - 13:00Preview:15.
