A Chinese cloisonné small stupa 铜鎏金掐丝珐琅佛塔一件 18th century or later 十八世纪或以后 The stupa of architectural form with a globular bumpa, decorated with conjoined foliate scroll and beaded swags, centered by a scroll-pattern decorated mandorla repoussé frontal, the bumpa surmounted by a cylindrical tower of "parasols", flanked by a pair of scarves decorated with enameled flowers; all raised on square scroll-decorated steps, further raised on a waisted square plinth, the underside of the base incised with a visvavajra. Born to Polish immigrants in New York City, Potter began his self-edification in the arts during his youth while exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a prominent mathematician and engineer, he participated in the Manhattan Project and later was a designer of complex defense systems. Together with his wife, the abstract artist Berne Potter, he was active in the art and antique worlds of New York and became friends with important gallerists and collectors, including Julius Carlebach and Melvin Gutman of Cole Galleries, Ltd., New York.
