司南佩为青金石质，包浆厚重。器呈圆柱形，弧面微凹，腰际有横向的凹槽，顶部突出圆形，底部为一小盘形，边缘圆滑，腰际有横穿孔，可穿系佩挂。青金石灿若蓝宝石，色调高贵，中国古代通常用青金石作为上天威严崇高的象征。王充《论衡》有云：“司南之杓，投入于地，其只指南。”可见司南原用于指南定向。在汉代栻占之风大盛时，又称为测凶算吉的工具。
