Carlo Maratta or Maratti (13 May 1625 - 15 December 1713) was a respected Italian painter who produced works mostly in the Classical style; the background gridlines suggest that this is a study intended to be worked up into a larger painting. W Hylton (Dyer) Longstaffe (2 February 1826 - 4 February 1898) was born at Norton, County Durham and was a noted historian, the author of several works on English and local history; he also designed the original arms for Middlesborough.Condition Report: Fine condition, mount soiled.
