A head of a Bodhisattva, schist, Northeastern Afghanistan/Northwestern Pakistan, Gandhāra region, 2nd-3rd century, This bodhisattva (future Buddha) has all the characteristics of ‘classical Gandhāran’ art, the conglomerate of the Greco- Roman style and Indian Buddhist iconography and philosophy. A finely carved symmetrical oval face with full bowed lips, almond shaped eyes, a straight nose, two large earrings and a typical Asian moustache. The hairstyle is composed of a turban and jewellery, surmounted by a typical Gandharan uṣṇīṣa, the “cranial protuberance” that refers to the enlightenment of Buddha. H 15,5 cm,
