A fine Longton Hall sauceboat, circa 1753-55A fine Longton Hall sauceboat, circa 1753-55Crisply moulded with rococo C-scroll borders and a diaper ground, the high scrolling handle with incised hatching, painted with formal floral sprays in a vibrant famille rose palette, an elaborate black pencilled border below the inside rim, further scattered flowers and a strawberry-like sprig to the interior, 20.3cm longProvenanceNina Weil CollectionSylvia and Alan Low CollectionA similar sauceboat with a plainer, rather inadequate handle is illustrated alongside a matching shard excavated at the factory site by Barker and Cole, Digging for Early Porcelain (1998), p.16, figs.16a and b. An example painted in puce monochrome from the Barbara Leake Collection was sold by Bonhams on 12 March 2008, lot 61. Both the shape and palette of the enamelled decoration on the present lot reveals the strong link between Longton Hall and contemporary Staffordshire saltglaze.
