Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 550 to 330 BCE. A white stone conoid seal incised with a lion, griffin, or other feline creature, which would have doubled as both a stamp and pendant. The circular face is incised with the animal in profile looking back over its shoulder towards the sinuous tail, standing on large, clawed paws. A perforation is hand drilled through the protruding conical end for suspension as a necklace or from a belt. Included is a clay stamp of the seal motif. Size: 1" Diameter x 1.5" W (2.5 cm x 3.8 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
