Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery portrait vessel showing an amicable visage whose smile stretches across the face. The countenance consists of generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy brows, a prominent aquiline nose with flared nostrils, bulging cheeks above deep nasolabial folds, and a pointed chin with a labret piercing above a cream-striped neck band. The amusing portrait protrudes beneath a domed coiffure, and on top is a flared spout with a thick rim.
