Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel of carinated circular form with a level base, a gradually sloped shoulder, a cylindrical spout with a thick, everted rim, and an attenuated, stirrup-shaped handle with a whistle tone hole on top. The handle connects to the verso of a highly stylized anthropomorphic head bearing an enormous nose, slender eyes, thick lips, and incised nasolabial folds, all beneath a wavy coiffure and framed by a pair of earspools. A large, pectoral-shaped adornment is incised beneath the neckline of the head, perhaps symbolizing royalty or spiritualism.
