Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona and New Mexico, Hopi People, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fearsome Black Ogre or Nataska (also Nata 'aska) kachina (katsina) doll, hand carved from wood with painted details and additional attributes. In one hand is a glass trade bead implement, and the other hold a painted cloth, upon his head is a felted hair decorated with a shell, feather, and stone hairpiece. Additional shells are attached to his leather armbands and shoes. Nataska is one of the family of ogre kachinas who guard Soyok Wuhtl (Monster Woman), and his large snout with sharp teeth, ensure that the children in the audience behave during his performance.
