Imperial Formal Winter Dragon Robe (Chaopao)The finely woven silk and metallic thread Chaopao, fabricated as a single robe but with the appearance of an upper coat and lower skirt, the upper portion depicting a large front-facing five-claw dragon with couched gilt metallic threads in pursut of a flaming pearl, set above a stormy sea with multiple mountains, rising from a layer of cloud-bands over diagonal lishui stripes, each sleeve also couched stitched with metallic thread to depict wreathing dragons in profile, the imperial yellow ground containing bats in flight and multiple shou symbols; the lower part with multiple evenly spaced wrap-around roundels, each with a front-facing dragon, on a yellow silk ground, the roundels rest above a wide border of dragons in both profile and front-facing, within an upper border of clouds and lower border of swirling waves and undulating lishui stripes.
