Khmer Sandstone Head of VishnuCambodia, 7th/8th Century. The male deity with a cylindrical headdress, long pierced ears and well-carved distinctive distinctive features. cf. A sandstone head of Vishnu, 7th/8th Century, (84.38) Indiana University, Ezkenazi Museum of Art, is similar in iconography and in the handling of facial features to the Khmer head of Vishnu, offered here. Although the head in the museum’s collection is only 4 in. high, they share a cylindrical headdress with slight downward center projection at the rim, elongated ears with pierced lower lobes, arched brows, downcast almond shaped eyes, and a gentle smile with a heavy, rounded upward-curved lower lip. Size: 4 3/8 x 4 1/2 x 11 1/4 in.
