砚随石材之形雕成白菜一棵，砚首为白菜根蒂，片片菜叶自然包裹，用刀圆熟，不露刀痕，形象生动自然。石色紫，纯净细腻，为文房实用佳器。
清代以白菜为题材制作的器物颇多，可见当时流行程度。盖因白菜谐音“百财”，有百财聚来、财货丰隆的好口彩，又因其颜色和外形，可象征家室清白。
