端石为材雕就，形制长方，边角转折缓和。石质细腻，色泽黝黑泛紫，石品佳美。落潮式墨池，砚面平整，砚首以浅浮雕之法，饰青竹吐翠，短短竹节、片片碎叶，丝丝含情；春梅含苞，阵阵春寒、点点红梅，枝枝夺意；苍松振臂，根根劲叶、条条遒枝，处处可人。
岁寒三友，即松、竹、梅三种纹饰，以其岁寒不凋的特性，比兴君子坚贞之德，而受到历代帝王的喜爱。
宋·林景熙《霁山集》：“即其居累土为山，种梅百本，与乔松、修篁为岁寒三友”。
松，枝条盘曲，主稦挺拔雄健，所谓勇者如松；竹，一片苍翠，节节上开，不屈而心虚，所谓清者如竹；梅，香气四溢、玉骨冰心，坚韧不拔，所谓雅者如梅。
