Born in Tianjin in 1929, he relocated to Taiwan as a 20-year-old, and there he made a connection with Li Lin-tsan, then curator, and later deputy director of the National Palace Museum. As a result, Mr. Tsao began his study of traditional Chinese painting by refining his connoisseur with pieces formerly in the Imperial Collection. Shortly after he wed in 1963, Mr. Tsao immigrated to the United States and established an art gallery in San Francisco that focused on traditional Chinese art. At the gallery's onset, only a handful of collectors were active in this field, however the potential for growth was enormous. Over forty years in business, and aided by a keen eye, rigorous scholar and excellent foresight, Mr. Tsao generously shared his passion and deep understanding of Chinese culture, and he mentored many in the subtleties of Chinese painting. At the Far East Fine Arts gallery, Jung Ying Tsao fostered several important collections of Chinese art, and the paintings that passed through his hands have been celebrated in numerous highly regarded museum exhibitions and scholarly texts. Among his published contributions, he wrote several books for which there was a dearth of information at the time, including The Four Jens (1977), Chinese Paintings of the Middle Qing Dynasty (1987), and The Paintings of Xugu and Qi Baishi (1993). Mr. Tsao's legacy is also reflected in theprehensive collections of Chinese painting he built that examined focused periods of Chinese painting. The museum exhibitions and their apanying publications Between the Thunder and the Rain Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2000), and New Songs on Ancient Tunes , Honolulu Art Museum (2007), explored the 19th and 20th century painting and calligraphy from the collection of the Reverend Richard Fabian. And in 2016, the Los Angeles County Museum presented Alternative Dreams, 17th Century Chinese Painting from the Tsao Family Collection . In 2013 the Jung Ying Tsao family established the Mozhai Foundation to carry on his legacy of scholar, connoisseur, and intercultural understanding.
