A PAINTING OF WHITE JAMBHALA ON A DRAGONTIBET, 19TH CENTURY241⁄2 x 381⁄2 in. (62.2 x 97.8 cm.)Details241⁄2 x 381⁄2 in. (62.2 x 97.8 cm.)ProvenanceOriental Gem Co., London, by 1971.The John C. and Susan L. Huntington Collection, Columbus, Ohio.LiteratureHimalayan Art Resources, item no. 24807.The present painting depicts the deity, White Jambhala, depicted seated on the back of a snarling and coiled Chinese-style dragon. This form of Jambhala descends from the teachings of Atisha (982-1054), and according to that tradition, is considered an emanation of the bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara. This unusual horizontal-format painting includes an arhat-like figure at left and the Four Harmonious Brothers (the partridge, hare, monkey, and elephant) at right, all amidst a verdant, Chinese-style landscape with persimmon trees and snow-capped mountains. The image of Jambhala holds a trident in the proper right hand and a jewel-topped staff in the proper left; the dragon on which he sits is shown striding on a lotus base in front of a palace. ---
