After being exiled from his kingdom by a king who envied his good looks, Madhavanala falls in love with the maiden Kamakandala and impersonates various characters in order to win her affections. The present painting depicts Madhavanala, disguised as a wandering musician, embracing Kamakandala in her chamber. The story ends tragically when Kamakandala, mistakenly believing her lover has died, commits suicide, and after hearing the news, Madhavanala follows suit. ---
