A massive hand-built gray stoneware vessel with incised decorations. This piece has a slightly conical body and rests on a flat base with walls rising dramatically upward to a carinated edge, then flaring outward to the wide rim. The body is decorated with a register of incised motifs along the exterior. These linear patterns may contain celestial symbolism, depicting four-pointed star motifs within a circle with trailing vertical and horizontal lines. The etched motifs were painted with white pigments to contrast with the darker ground, and much of this original pigment remains. A very pretty and large example with nice burnishing marks! Size: 14.375" Diameter x 11.25" H (36.5 cm x 28.6 cm) This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated.
