**Originally Listed At $2800** Southeast Asia, Philippines, Ifugao culture, ca. 19th century CE. A delightful dancing bulul figure with outstretched arms on an integral pedestal! The bulul sculptures are highly stylized representations of ancestors and are thought to gain power through the presence of an ancestral spirit; with this power they are used to guard important crops like rice. This example stands upon thick legs on an integral, hourglass shaped pedestal; his nude body upright and forward facing, and his simple visage is stylized - yet has surprisingly well-defined ears! The arms are carved separately and attached at the shoulder sockets with visible perforations where the nails or rivets were driven though the torso. The entire surface is a deep brown and black, a rich patina from years spent overseeing a field or household. The Ifugao are particularly noted for their skill in carving these wonderful bulul figures. Most examples are seated with arms folded or at the sides, and a standing figure with outspread arms is exceptional! Size: 5.5" L x 15" W x 24" H (14 cm x 38.1 cm x 61 cm) Cf.
