An inscribed gold damascened steel helmet (khula khud) and armguard, probably Iran, 18th century, the helmet of typical high domed form with applied upper spike finial, adjustable nose-guard and two plume holders, the decoration consisting of floral sprays contained within medallions, a band of fine naskh to lower rim, and facets of the spike; helmet 39cm. high (without mail); the armguard decorated with repeating bands of flowerheads to side, a lobed medallion with inscription possibly a maker's signature, large flowers and looping vine to one end and inscription in naskh, 34cm. long (2)Helmet: Chain mails with sections missing, one plume holder broken, with loss of detail to damascening; armguard with losses to damascening
