An inscribed pear-wood sherbert spoon (qashaq) with portrait of Nasir Al-Din Shah, Abadeh, Iran, 19th century, the elaborate openwork handle with oval portrait surrounded by scrollwork and two angels supporting a crown, the spoon with nasta'liq Persian inscriptions contained within cartouches, 38.4cm. longIn the period 1800-1900 the town of Abadeh in Iran was most famous for its elaborately carved sherbet spoons (‘qashuq’) made of pear- and box-wood. They were the largest and most impressive spoons and were used for drinking sherbet. Slightly smaller ones were used for soup and rice.
