Two Ladies Making Music, Kangra, circa 1780-90, opaque pigments and gold in an oval cartouche with decorated spandrels, both holding what appear to be drumsticks, a pair in each hand, while a pair of drums awaits their attention, the central lady or princess is altogether carried away by the music as her eyes are closed in a kind of ecstasy, the curves of the ladies’ veils and bolsters echo those of the oval cartouche which encloses them, while black clouds amass menacingly above, 22 x 15cm. Comparable Kangra paintings which show similar bold simplification of volumes in favour of curving lines can ben seen in see W. Archer 1973, vol. II, Kangra nos. 59, 60).Archer, W.G., Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills, Sotheby Parke Bernet, London and New York, Oxford University Press, Delhi, 1973Please refer to department for condition report
