A seated portrait of a Maharaja, signed Nanak, probably Alwar, North India, late 19th century, gouache on paper heightened with gold and silver, the ruler depicted haloed and kneeling on a gold embroidered carpet with cushions either side and behind, a green curtain behind him and white marble pillars either side, an orange canopy rolled up above him, within a wide outer border containing lozenges of blue and green on a gold vegetal ground, with Persian inscription in white nasta'liq above and below, 35.5 x 27cm. Provenance: Ex-Collection Gunther HeilThis portrait display the interesting mix of the traditional arts of miniature painting with the increasing use of photography to capture the portraits of rulers in the mid- late 19th century.
