FIGURE OF THE 'THORN EXTRACTOR'. Italy. Date: 19th century. Maker/Designer: After antique model. Technique: White marble. Measurement: 63x35x38cm. The antique model of the thorn extractor, also called Spinario, is a Hellenistic bronze sculpture, which today can be found in the Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome. It already gained a lot if interest in the early Renaissance where it was copied many times. The first bronze casts we know of are from this period.
