LEUNG KUI DING (LIANG JUTING, BORN 1945) Words from the Stones, 2006LEUNG KUI DING (LIANG JUTING, BORN 1945)Words from the Stones, 2006Hanging scroll, ink on paper, signed by the artist Juting. 27 x 14in (68.5 x 35.5cm)梁巨廷(生於1945年) 石語 水墨紙本 立軸 二〇〇六年作款識:巨廷Provenance:Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong來源:香港漢雅軒The imposing rock on the right side of the painting is portrayed as a monumental mountain in traditional landscape paintings. The canonical relationship between mountainscapes and miniature garden mountains appeared as early as in works of the late-Ming artist Wu Bin (1573-1620). In the Song, mountainscapes were the model for rockeries, but Wu Bin has instead used the latter as one model for his mountainscapes; authority has passed from the tradition to contemporary visual culture. (Jonathan Hay, 2016) Leung Kui Ting takes on this tradition in his series of "Words from the Stones" and further challenges the viewer's perceptive experience by infusing the laborious painted ink landscape with geometric forms suggestive of urban visual culture.Born in 1945 in Guangzhou, Leung Kui Ting moved to Hong Kong with his family in 1948. In 1964, he studied painting under Lui Shou-Kwan (1919-1975) and design under Wucius Wong (b. 1936). The artist is currently the Principal and Director of Academic Affairs of Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Art and an Honorary Advisor to the Leisure and Cultural Service Department, Hong Kong. The artist's works have been collected by the Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum, National Gallery Singapore, Hong Kong Museum of Art, The Luis de Camões Museum of Macao, etc.
