Ω A RARE CHINESE BRONZE BOMBE CENSER, QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD, 1662 – 1722 清 康熙 狮耳铜炉 ‘古式’款 Of bombe form with lion mask handles, the base cast with a two-character mark, ‘Gushi’ ‘Antique Style’, the bronze with a dark brown patina, fitted box (2) Height: 7cm Width: 13cm Provenance: Maria Kiang, Chinese Art, Hong Kong. Exhibited Hong Kong 2019, cat.no. 32. The shape of the present censer is exceedingly rare in bronze, although a direct comparison can be made to a small group of imperial porcelains of the Kangxi period made for the scholars desk, covered either in clair-de-lune or white glazes. No other bronze example is known. Similar white-glazed Kangxi censers can be found in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, Cat. No. 231 and another white glazed example from the Wang Xing Lou Collection, published in Imperial Perfection: The Palace Porcelain of Three Emperors, Hong Kong, 2004, pp.170-171, cat. no. 61.
