Summarised, glazed to impasto, spatulaed style of painting. Philippen completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and studied at the Pforzheim School of Applied Arts and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. The artist first worked as a goldsmith, but since 1965 he increasingly turned to painting again and experimented with self-made colours, often with admixtures of sand, for example. Summarische, lasierende bis pastose, gespachtelte Malweise. Philippen absolvierte eine Lehre zum Goldschmied und studierte an der Kunstgewerbeschule Pforzheim und an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Der Künstler arbeitete zunächst als Goldschmied, wandte sich aber seit 1965 wieder verstärkt der Malerei zu und experimentierte mit selbst hergestellten Farben, oft mit Beimischungen etwa von Sand.
