Description SCULPTURE: CRYSTAL SKULL / MEMENTO MORI, 20th century, probably white transparent quartz / crystal, naturalistically worked in slight stylisation; matt surface. Since the 16th century, skulls have been common vanitas representations, which were intended to show believers the transience and the deceptive appearance of earthly life in order to encourage them to lead a God-fearing life. H. 11,5 x l. 17 x w. 10,5 cm. (With inclusions, partially soiled / rubbed).SKULPTUR: KRISTALL-SCHÄDEL / MEMENTO MORI, 20. Jh., wohl weißer transparenter Quarz / Kristall, in leichter Stilisierung naturalistisch gearbeitet; matte Oberfläche. Totenschädel sind seit dem 16. Jh. geläufige Vanitas-Darstellungen, die den Gläubigen die Vergänglichkeit und den trügerischen Schein des irdischen Lebens bildhaft vor Augen führen sollten, um sie so zu einer gottesfürchtigen Lebensführung anzuhalten.
