Description Bernardus Petrus (Ben) Viegers (Netherlands, 1886-1947) Hague School oil on canvas painting depicting a canal with a bridge passing overhead and several figures crossing the bridge or walking alongside the canal, with architecture in the background on both sides under a hazy afternoon sky. Signed "B. Viegers" lower right. Housed in a simple wood frame Sight: 21 3/4" H x 25 1/8" W. Framed: 25 1/4" H x 29 1/2" W. Biographical Note: Bernardus Viegers, often called Ben Viegers, was born in the Hague and self-taught as an artist, taking influence from the French Impressionists as well as from earlier generations of Dutch painters including those of the 19th century Hague School. Himself a member of the Haagse Kunstkring, or Hague Circle of Artists - a group of artists and collectors founded in 1891 that included visual artists, writers, architects, musicians, and designers, among others - Viegers is best remembered for his flower pieces and his landscapes, including those in the traditional Dutch themes of winter scenes, marine paintings, and cityscapes, as in the present example.
