Biographical Note: Bernardus Viegers, often called Ben Viegers, was born in the Hague and self-taught as an artist, taking influence from the French Impressionists as well as from earlier generations of Dutch painters including those of the 19th century Hague School. Himself a member of the Haagse Kunstkring, or Hague Circle of Artists - a group of artists and collectors founded in 1891 that included visual artists, writers, architects, musicians, and designers, among others - Viegers is best remembered for his flower pieces and his landscapes, including those in the traditional Dutch themes of winter scenes, marine paintings, and cityscapes, as in the present example.
